British Values
Promoting British Values at Coppice Primary Academy
At Coppice Primary Academy we aim to –
• enable children to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence.
• enable children to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England.
• encourage children to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely.
• enable children to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England.
• further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling children to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures.
• encourage respect for other people.
• encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England.
We achieve these aims through our diverse curriculum and our continual work on Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development of the children in our care. Our policies and practices fully support the development of children’s values and ethics
Democracy
- Each year the children decide upon their class charter and the rights associated with these. All the children contribute to the drawing up of the charter.
- We have a student council who meet to discuss issues raised in class or council meetings.
- There is a suggestion box available for children to suggest improvements to our school – these are then discussed and acted upon at school council meetings.
- Children and parents have questionnaires where they are able to put forward their views about the school.
The Rule of Law
- The importance of laws, whether they are those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are reinforced.
- Pupils are taught from an early age the rules of the school. Be Ready, Be Respectful, Be Safe
- Pupils are taught the value of and reasons behind rules and laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.
- Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service help reinforce this message.
Individual Liberty
- At Coppice, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering education.
- Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our e-safety and PSHE lessons.
Mutual Respect
- Mutual respect is at the heart of our values and is one of our school rules to be respectful. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect.
Acceptance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
- Coppice is a diverse school. We actively promote diversity through our celebrations of different faiths and cultures. Religious Education lessons and PSHE lessons reinforce messages of tolerance and respect for others.
- Children are taught that they have a right to express their religion and beliefs at school without fear of any upset. They are taught to be individual and respect everyone as individuals regardless of their faith or beliefs.
- Members of different faiths and religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school.
- The children visit places of worship that are important to different faiths.
- As a whole school, we promote understanding
- We promote the rights of each individual to have a faith or no faith.
