Consultation on Fasting Policy
Fasting and Ramadan – Context for parent consultation
From conversations with Muslim staff and from reading about Ramadan and fasting, it is our understanding that there is no requirement for children to fast until they reach puberty. However, we also understand that some children want to prepare themselves for this time by fasting before they reach puberty. From conversations we know that some children have a deep sense of faith and want to fast along with other family members.
I feel that it is the right time to consult on this again and reach a position as a school before Ramadan in March 2025. I have drafted a policy that gives us a clear compromise on this, i.e. Y6 children may fast and stay in school. This is quite common in other primary schools that where a majority of the children are Muslim.
The position in the policy is designed to make it more planned and manageable and something special for our Y6 children. I would appreciate your thoughts, views, or suggestions before the governors make a final decision in a few weeks time. I am also consulting staff and will discuss with the school council.
After this we will expect all families to follow the policy.
Thank you in advance for your comments and your support.
Mr. John Taylor
